FAQ
There are rules and regulations for attending my classes and many questions will be answered in these. But here are some other common questions that I have been asked.
What is the difference between Tai Chi Chuan and Qi gong?
QG is a much simpler version of TCC, but it is largely exercising with very specific rhythms of breathing, which charges the body with qi, (chi or energy). TCC is more technical and more physically demanding.
I have heard that Qi gong has both external and internal movements?
The internal movements of QG are a unique form of exercise. By unblocking the energy gates, it promotes the health of the internal organs. It is quite unlike those exercises used in the West, such as running (for cardiovascular) or weightlifting (for muscular strength training).
Which is better for your health, Qi gong or Tai Chi Chuan?
Both are beneficial. They have different actions on the body. The breathing of QG is practised when doing TCC.
Can people who cannot do usual exercise routines do Tai Chi Chuan and Qi gong?
Yes, those who cannot do most forms of exercise find they can do some basic QG and gradually increase their ability to do more. QG can even be practised whilst sitting down. TCC requires the ability to move around more than QG, but it can still be practised with a diminished physical ability.
Does Tai Chi Chuan and Qi gong both promote health?
The practise of QG releases the qi or chi (energy) in the body by opening the energy gates and thus unblocking and allowing the qi to flow through the channels. It strengthens internal organs, is an aid to circulation, helps back and joint problems, eases nerve pain and generally fights all kinds of physical disease. TCC does the same but with the added benefits of helping balance improve and strengthening the muscles, coordination, and core of the body. The roots of TCC are in martial arts but QG was developed just as a therapeutic exercise. Both work on the mind, body and emotional/spiritual and therefore are ‘whole’ exercise systems.
Can I do Qi gong if I have poor health?
Yes, for many people, practising QG has given relief to existing health problems. It can also help prevent chronic illnesses. I will enquire as to your general state of health before you begin the class and work with you, taking any problems you have, into account. That is part of the training I undertook.
Do I need to have any experience of doing Tai Chi Chuan or Qi gong before I join your classes?
None. I have beginner’s classes for TCC and QG can be done without having done it before.
What experience do I need of using a sword before I can do Tai Ji Juan?
You do not need any knowledge of using a sword. The classes are designed for complete beginners.
What are the benefits of doing Dai Yin and why combine it with Qi Gong?
DY and QG are both ancient forms of Chinese self-healing and go well together. DY is a series of stretches and movements that were designed to encourage the flexibility of all the muscles in the body and warm up the internal organs, whilst acting on the acupuncture pressure points and meridians.
Do I need to buy a sword to join the class?
No, not until you are sure you want to keep doing TJJ. Then, you will need to buy your own weapon. I will direct you towards the right choice.
I am quite elderly. Can I do Tai Chi Chuan and/or Qi gong, safely?
Yes. There are no age limits to doing either TCC or QG. My job is to make sure that you work safely and to the limit of your ability. I was trained specifically to safeguard my clients’ health. I will ask for your details regarding this, so that I can be sure to oversee your requirements whilst you are with my class.
Do I need special clothing to do any of your classes?
You need to wear soft, flat shoes, like plimsoles, and loose clothing for comfort. You will be given a sheet of information about the regulations to attend the class. Clothing requirements are set out on that.
Can I bring drinks to the class?
A bottle of water is allowed. Care must be taken with it, however.
Can I bring my children with me when I come to your classes?
I am afraid not. There are no separate facilities where children and other guests can sit/wait. Guests watching the classes are not permitted. Pets (dogs) are also not allowed on the training premises.
